Configuring the room name for NetSupport School Students and Tutors by Group Policy (GPO)

This article applies to NetSupport School version 14.00 and below. To see steps on how to use this on version 15.00 and higher, click here.

Within NetSupport School, it is possible to configure the room name for Windows Student devices and Tutors using the ADM templates that are provided with a NetSupport School Tutor installation. 

Step 1
First, you will need to import the NetSupport School Student and Tutor ADM or ADMX Template files into the GPO. To do this, please refer to the following technical article:

Step 2
Applying the Room name for the Students via Group Policy 

Assuming the Student machines are split in AD OUs reflecting the different classrooms they belong in; you can set a room name for each OU. 

  1. Create a GPO for each OU and navigate to the policy setting (we recommend that you apply this at the Computer level):
    Administrative Templates|NetSupport Student Settings|Connectivity|Room
  2. Set the following policy option to Enabled: Room.
  3. Then, enter the name of the room 

The next time the Student machines restart, the policy will apply to the machines and the Students will connect to their respective rooms. 

 Applying the Room name for the Tutors locally or via Group Policy 

 Option one: Configuring the room name locally 

  1. Open the Tutor Console. 
  2. Select {School}{Configuration} from the Tutor Console drop-down menu. 
  3. Select Student Selection. 

  1. Click the required option in the Room Mode section and enter the required room name(s).
  2. Click OK.

Option two: Configuring the room name via Group Policy 

  1. First create a GPO at the OU level of your choice and navigate to the policy setting (we recommend that you apply this at the Computer level):  Administrative Templates|NSS Tutor Settings|Student Selection|Room Mode
  2. Choose which policy to apply:– Select from a list of Rooms (useful if the Tutor is using a laptop and moves from classroom to classroom for example).
    – Room Mode Details (if the Tutor machine is staying in a single room)
  3. Set the chosen policy to ENABLED and enter the room name(s) 

Step 3
You will also need to apply the below policy to enable the Student selection mode to Room mode on the Tutor Console. This will configure the Tutor Console use the Room mode method of Student Selection at startup
.

  1. Create a GPO at the level of your choice and navigate to the policy setting (we recommend that you apply this at the Computer level):
    Administrative Templates|NSS Tutor Settings|Student Selection
  2. Set the following policy option to Enabled: Startup Connection Mode
  3. Under Options, select Connect to Students in Room(s)
